Additional Monitoring Add-Ons

While Heat Watch provides a spatially-rich depiction of heat, additional field data enhances a critical understanding of heat, exposure, and overlapping climate hazards. The following add-ons are community-based approaches to gathering hazard data that sync well with the timing, engagement, and focus of Heat Watch.

These services can be adapted with combinations and long-term monitoring, and can serve a variety of heat action planning purposes.

Mobile

Expand from a single-day of diurnal periods (morning, afternoon and evening) with additional days of mobile heat monitoring to examine how heat behaves across a variety of summer weather conditions. Establish ongoing mobile monitoring routines, or evaluate large-area mitigation strategies, like cooling corridors and parks.

Indoor

Low-income populations, those who cannot afford air conditioning, and those who live in mobile or manufactured homes face a high risk of indoor heat exposure, particularly when individuals are elderly and/or homebound. Monitoring indoor temperatures helps emergency managers and planners target heat-relief efforts where they are most needed.

Stationary

Pair stationary sensors along with your mobile campaign to understand variation in heat over time and across a variety of land uses and geographies.

Air Quality

Measure the distribution of air pollutants along with your heat mapping campaign to investigate how these hazards coincide while raising community awareness.

Continuous Monitoring & Evaluation

Continue to gather data on hazards over time as an ongoing engagement with CAPA, and use these services to evaluate the impact of cooling solutions over time.

Engagement

Expand the opportunity for community involvement by garnering input on hot spots, heat perceptions, and adaptations directly through surveys.
