Going Global in Bandung, Indonesia

In CAPA’s first of three international projects of 2022, we collaborated with researchers and students at the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) to conduct a heat mapping assessment of air and surface temperature across the City of Bandung, Indonesia. Student participants paired up on motorbikes and navigated fifteen areas of the City to collect ambient measurements on a hot July day. The following weekend, the student researchers revisited many of the same locations, this time geared with FLIR thermal imagery cameras and prompted by questions about the built environment, heat adaptation behaviors, and potential interventions. Outputs with their photographs and reflections are gathered in an interactive Story Map here.

Using the collected information, the CAPA team is now working to compare the modeled heat data with the perception survey data. The project team is also collaborating on a publication presenting the novel approach towards building heat awareness and community-generated datasets.

This work is conducted in partnership with the World Bank’s Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery, who funded the project.
